Making disciples

Jesus told us to “Go and make disciples”

Some have said that perhaps a better English reading of the Greek text in the manuscript would be “As you are going, make disciples”

But the mandate is clear.

The question is: “how”?

There are countless resources on this, so I just want to say a few things that may help pastors who are floundering:

  1. Just begin by writing out a list of people whom you want to speak to about their spiritual life.
  2. Contact them and be genuinely curious and interested in their life and their story.
  3. Ask them questions and seek to guide the conversation to spiritual matters.
  4. Make sure to ask them about eternity and their relationship with Jesus.
  5. Propose that you should get together more often to discuss their spiritual life. Offer a Bible study that helps them to know the gospel of Jesus and the foundation of a life in Christ. (I have materials you can use if you contact me pastorencouragement@gmail.com)
  6. Make it a priority and be disciplined. Meet together with them whether in person, over the phone or over the internet.
  7. Slowly and intentionally take them through the Scriptures so they know what a life in Christ is all about.

Don’t worry about if you are doing it right.

Don’t second guess whether you are the right person to be doing it.

Don’t downplay the significance of the time spent together in the Word and prayer.

Let the power of God’s word and His Holy Spirit flow through you.

If you would do this with only one person this week, the ripple effect could be more significant than you know.

And trust me, once you do it with one person, you will get so excited about it that you won’t be able to keep silent about doing it with as many people as you can!
